When these people do have a few minutes to surf, they would rather spend time evaluating sites than picking through the large lists. Think about having to peruse all of the what's new pages. What this e-newsletter intends to do is attempt to keep you informed on SOME of these new sites. the ones that would be MOST VALAUBLE TO LIBRARIANS. Plus, if a great ol' site exists i'll let you know. Being exhaustive is impossible unless i want to have a phone bill that will need to be delivered by semi. who is putting this together? my name is gary price and i have an M.L.I.S from Wayne State University. PRELIMINARIES:
It has been a while since we last met and I apologize for the
delay in getting the newsletter out. As you probably guessed,
I have been very busy. Now that almost all of the dust has
settled the sites of Issue #6 follow. I hope they are of value.
SO WHERE HAVE I BEEN?
In the last months I have been completing a requirement for my
MLIS degree from Wayne State University here in Detroit. All
done.
Btw, if any of you are interested in Henry E. Bliss, the often forgotten
library thinker, let me know. He was the subject of my final paper. A
man with fascinating ideas who has been all but overlooked by a majority
of our profession.
I have also been busy looking and interviewing for employment.
It is with great pleasure and excitement that I can announce
that I got a job. That's right folks, we are moving.

search engine placed on the web by Digital Equipment.
Alta Vista (http://altavista.digital.com), is a excellent and
useful tool.
Not only can you search from the largest universe of pages
and Usenet postings available. Double clicking on the advanced
search button users can perform searches using boolean operators,
nest search strategies, and sort results by chosen terms.
Additionally, the site is very fast
in returning results. Give it a try. Alta Vista could prove very
useful to the information professional. Let me know what you think.

PRELIMINARIES:
We're Back!.
IN SITE has returned and hopefully it is more useful than ever.
Where has IN SITE been?
For the past few months I have been becoming familiar
with my new job as a Subject Specialist at
the George Washington University, Virginia Campus
(near Dulles International Airport). Things
have been going great. My new job as a subject
specialist is wonderful. A big THANK YOU to the
entire GELMAN LIBRARY and VIRGINIA CAMPUS
staffs for making me feel comfortable in
my new job.
Learning and adjusting to my new responsibilities
along with learning/discovering the area (lots to do) have
kept me away from putting out the letter. However, as things get settled,
I am ready, willing, and able to continue with IN SITE.
Before continuing with the list, allow me to note how
much I appreciate the support you have shown
for this project. Over the past months the subscriber
list has continued to grow . Additionally, the
hit counter on the IN SITE homepage (thanks John Rivard)
continues to turn at a rapid rate.
Finally, the list of sites that follow have been culled
from lists I have compiled over the past
months. While most of the sites are new, some might
be a bit dated but nonetheless useful.

IN SITE is back. Before we begin thanks to all of you who have
contacted me since June asking me when and if I would be compiling
material for another issue. Well, I have been and here it is.
After graduating with my MLIS from Wayne State University in Detroit, I have

SITE is back, hopefully on a regular basis.
In upcoming issues, I hope to add a bit more description to some of
the listings and continue to "mine" (a popular Internet term) for
materials below the top level homepage. While giving the top level
URL can often send you on your way to productive work, I think
"digging" and "getting out" what is most useful is a tack we should
all use. Of course, time is limited, so hopefully IN SITE can help
out in this area. It has been my experience that while
some users enjoy hunting from the top page down, most want to go to
the exact location where they can find what they need quickly and
efficiently. Additionally, those of us who use the Internet as a TOOL
in locating information, can become more valuable by at least making a
mental note or two of what may be of use on a given page. Of course,
search engines and directories help with this, but knowing what is available,
at least on a general basis, before you need it can also be useful. This in
some ways is similar to checking out and "learning" a new print tool
when it arrives, so you have some idea of what is contained on the
printed pages. I hope IN SITE can also serve a purpose in keeping you
knowledgeable in subject areas other than those you normally cover.
The interdisciplinary nature of the net is a wonderful thing.
Of course, many of you monitor lists and the like in your fields, but
perhaps useful tools exist in other areas, hopefully IN SITE will give
you a start in surveying what is available. Over the past months the
Internet has continued to grow faster than ever. As information
professionals it is key that we help clear up many of the myths of
what the net is and is not and demonstrate to users that valuable
information DOES reside on the net and all this hoopla is not a push
to market cars and get rich quick schemes. Additionally, we must also
demonstrate that if the answer does not reside on the net, this TOOL
is also valuable to help locate PEOPLE or GROUPS who DO have the
answer or answers being looked for. Finally, we must help end users
develop some critical information skills so they can,
at least for a moment, question the authority and timeliness
of the information.
